walk in the Spirit and Fruit of the Spirit

Walk in the Spirit: We are Set Free

The Christian life involves a journey of transformation from initial salvation to spiritual maturity. This two-part lesson explores the vital concepts of Walking in the Spirit and the Fruit of the Spirit, connecting our identity in Christ with our daily lives. Part 1 focuses on the practical discipline of depending on the Holy Spirit's power to overcome our fallen nature, recognizing that our Christian freedom is an opportunity for loving service, not self-indulgence. Part 2 shifts to the evidence of that walk: the "fruit," which is the supernatural manifestation of Christ's unified character in the believer. The successful Christian life is supported through this dependence, allowing the nine graces of love, joy, peace, and self-control to flourish within, transforming our character and relationships.

Part 1: Walking in the Spirit — The Battle Between Flesh and Freedom

Part 2: The Fruit of the Spirit — The Life of Christ Lived Out

Part 1: Walking in the Spirit — The Battle Between Flesh and Freedom

Section Overview

This lesson explores the essential Christian discipline of "walking in the Spirit." As believers, we have been "called unto liberty"—set free from the guilt of sin through God's forgiveness, the penalty of sin through Christ’s sacrifice, and the power of sin through the Holy Spirit within us. However, this freedom is not a license to indulge our fallen human nature (the "flesh"), but a divine opportunity to serve others humbly in love.

To "walk in the Spirit" means to live in a state of constant dependence on God’s power to overcome our selfish impulses. Because the Spirit and the flesh are in direct opposition, we face a daily internal conflict. This lesson teaches us how to navigate that battle by yielding to the Spirit's leadership rather than our own desires.

Key Teachings & References

1. Liberty vs. License: Freedom for Service
True Christian liberty is not the freedom to do whatever we want; it is the freedom to do what we ought. We must be careful not to let our liberty degenerate into "license" (sinning because we are under grace). Instead, the Spirit empowers us to fulfill the entire law by obeying the command to love our neighbor as ourselves. Our freedom is a tool for humble service, not a platform for selfishness.

  • Galatians 5:13-14: “For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’”

  • 1 Peter 2:16: “Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God.”

  • Romans 6:18: “and, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness.”

2. The Internal Conflict: Spirit vs. Flesh
Every believer experiences a tug-of-war. The flesh (our sinful nature) desires things contrary to God, while the Spirit desires things contrary to the flesh. This conflict is designed to keep us from simply following our own whims. To win this battle, we must "walk" by the Spirit, which means setting our minds on spiritual things and relying on His strength to restrain the flesh.

  • Galatians 5:16-17: “But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh...”

  • Romans 8:5-6: “For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit...”

  • Romans 7:22-23: “For I delight in the law of God, in my inner being, but I see in my members another law waging war against the law of my mind...”

  • Romans 13:13-14: “Let us walk properly as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and sensuality, not in quarreling and jealousy. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.“

3. The Works of the Flesh: A Warning to Believers
The "acts of the flesh" are the obvious results of living apart from God's Spirit. These include moral uncleanness (impurity), living with no moral restraint (sensuality/debauchery), and relational sins like discord, jealousy, and "factions" (creating cliques or divisions). Paul warns that a life characterized by these behaviors is inconsistent with inheriting the Kingdom of God.

  • Galatians 5:19-21: “Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality... those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.”

  • Colossians 3:5-6: “Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion... On account of these the wrath of God is coming.”

  • Ephesians 5:3: “But sexual immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints.”

3 But fornication and all uncleanness or covetousness, let it not even be named among you, as is fitting for saints.

  • 📜 Galatians 5:13–14

13 For you have been called to live in freedom, my brothers and sisters. But don’t use your freedom to satisfy your sinful nature. Instead, use your freedom to serve one another in love.
14 For the whole law can be summed up in this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”

    📜 Galatians 5:16–17

16 So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves.
17 The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires. These two forces are constantly fighting each other, so you are not free to carry out your good intentions.

    📜 Galatians 5:19–21

19 When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, the results are very clear: sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures,
20 idolatry, sorcery, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissension, division,
21 envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other sins like these. Let me tell you again, as I have before, that anyone living that sort of life will not inherit the Kingdom of God.

    📜 1 Peter 2:16

16 For you are free, yet you are God’s slaves, so don’t use your freedom as an excuse to do evil.

    📜 Romans 6:18

18 Now you are free from your slavery to sin, and you have become slaves to righteous living.

    📜 Romans 8:5–6

5 Those who are dominated by the sinful nature think about sinful things, but those who are controlled by the Holy Spirit think about things that please the Spirit.
6 So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace.

    📜 Romans 7:22–23

22 I love God’s law with all my heart.
23 But there is another power within me that is at war with my mind. This power makes me a slave to the sin that is still within me.

    📜 Romans 13:13–14

13 Because we belong to the day, we must live decent lives for all to see. Don’t participate in the darkness of wild parties and drunkenness, or in sexual promiscuity and immoral living, or in quarreling and jealousy.
14 Instead, clothe yourself with the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ. And don’t let yourself think about ways to indulge your evil desires.

    📜 Colossians 3:5–6

5 So put to death the sinful, earthly things lurking within you. Have nothing to do with sexual immorality, impurity, lust, and evil desires. Don’t be greedy, for a greedy person is an idolater, worshiping the things of this world.
6 Because of these sins, the anger of God is coming.

    📜 Ephesians 5:3

3 Let there be no sexual immorality, impurity, or greed among you. Such sins have no place among God’s people.

    📜 Gálatas 5:19–21

    19 Ora, as obras da carne são manifestas: imoralidade sexual, impureza e libertinagem;
20 idolatria e feitiçaria; ódio, discórdia, ciúmes, ira, egoísmo, dissensões, facções
21 e inveja; embriaguez, orgias e coisas semelhantes.

    📜 Romanos 7:22–23

    22 De fato, no íntimo do meu ser tenho prazer na lei de Deus;

    📜 Gálatas 5:19–21

    19 Las obras de la naturaleza pecaminosa se conocen bien: inmoralidad sexual, impureza y libertinaje;
20 idolatría y brujería; odio, discordia, celos, arrebatos de ira, rivalidades, disensiones, sectarismos
21 y envidia; borracheras, orgías y otras cosas parecidas.

    📜 Romanos 7:22–23

    22 Porque en lo íntimo de mi ser me deleito en la ley de Dios;

Key Aspects

  • Freedom for Service: Use your liberty as a platform for love.
Christian liberty is the radical freedom from the power of sin, granted so that we may serve others rather than indulge our own selfish desires. Practically, when faced with a choice this week, ask yourself: "Am I using my freedom just because I can, or am I using it to benefit the person in front of me?" This turns every personal right into an opportunity for selfless ministry (Galatians 5:13, 1 Peter 2:16).

  • Walking by the Spirit: Replace willpower with divine dependence.
Overcoming the "cravings of the flesh" is not achieved by trying harder, but by actively yielding to the Holy Spirit's leading. When a familiar temptation or habit surfaces, replace the struggle of "white-knuckling" with a "surrender breath": "Holy Spirit, I cannot beat this on my own; I yield this moment to Your power." This shifts your focus from the sin to the Source of your strength (Galatians 5:16, Romans 8:5).

  • Managing the Conflict: Expect the internal tug-of-war.
There is a permanent, active opposition between your old nature and the Holy Spirit. Do not be discouraged when you feel an inner battle; instead, recognize it as a signal to choose your Master. When you feel the "pull" toward pride or anger, stop and acknowledge the conflict: "That is my old self talking, but I choose to follow the Spirit’s peace instead" (Galatians 5:17, Romans 7:22-23).

  • Refusing the Flesh: Recognize the high cost of self-rule.
Habitually living for self leads to relational destruction, emotional chaos, and spiritual distance. Practically, when you are in the middle of a conflict fueled by jealousy or a need to be right, pause and consider the "fruit" of that path. Ask: "Is winning this argument worth the spiritual loss and broken connection?" This awareness helps you flee the destructive patterns of the flesh (Galatians 5:21, Colossians 3:6).

Section Summary Statement

Walking in the Spirit is the essential, daily surrender of our personal liberty to the leadership of the Holy Spirit, transforming our freedom from a license for self-indulgence into a platform for sacrificial love. This supernatural walk requires an active mind-set focused on God, providing the only effective power to overcome the deep-seated conflict of the flesh and protecting the believer from the destructive, divisive works that separate us from the fullness of God’s Kingdom.

Section Questions

  1. Choosing Service Over Self: Since our freedom in Christ is an opportunity to serve rather than indulge the flesh (Galatians 5:13), what is one practical way you can use your time or resources this week to "humbly serve" someone in your family or church community?

  2. Identifying the Tug-of-War: We learned that the Spirit and the flesh are in constant opposition (Galatians 5:17). When you feel an impulse toward anger, jealousy, or selfish ambition, what is a specific "pause and pray" habit you can develop to ask the Spirit for leadership before you react?

  3. Mind-Set Management: Romans 8:5 tells us that those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. What are the primary "inputs" in your daily life (media, conversations, thoughts) that tend to pull your mind toward the flesh, and what is one "spiritual input" you can increase this week?

  4. Honest Self-Examination: The "works of the flesh" include relational sins like discord, dissension, and factions (Galatians 5:20). Is there a relationship in your life right now where you are "biting and devouring" (v. 15) through gossip or conflict? What step toward reconciliation does the Spirit want you to take?

  5. Defining True Liberty: How would you explain the difference between "license" (sinning because of grace) and "liberty" (freedom to serve God) to a new believer who is struggling with the transition from their old lifestyle to their new life in Christ?

  6. Submission to the Spirit's Direction: Being "led by the Spirit" (Galatians 5:18) implies movement and direction. As you look at your plans for the coming month, is there any area where you have not invited God's Spirit to lead? How can you practically surrender those plans to Him today?

Part 2: The Fruit of the Spirit — The Life of Christ Lived Out

Section Overview

While the "works" of the flesh are what we produce in our own strength, the "Fruit of the Spirit" is what God produces in us. This lesson explores the nine "graces" that constitute the fruit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. These are not separate fruits, but a single, unified character—the very life of Jesus Christ—grown in the heart of the believer.

This transformation requires "crucifying" the flesh—denying its passions—and "keeping in step" with the Spirit. As we abide in Christ, His character naturally flows through us. The presence of this fruit is the ultimate evidence of spiritual maturity and a life truly led by God.

Key Teachings & References

1. The Nine Facets of the Fruit: Nine Graces of Christ's Character
The Spirit produces a supernatural character that human effort cannot achieve. According to The Bible Knowledge Commentary, these are "nine graces" that represent the life of Christ lived out in each Christian. It is important to note that "fruit" is singular, signifying a unified character. When we walk in the Spirit, He produces all nine facets of this single fruit together (Galatians 5:22-23).

  • Love: Listed first as the foundation of all other graces. It is a self-sacrificing, divine love modeled by Christ’s sacrifice on the cross (John 3:16).

  • Joy: A deep and abiding inner rejoicing promised to those who abide in Christ. It does not depend on outward circumstances because it rests in God’s sovereign control (John 15:11).

  • Peace: An inner quietness and rest of heart even in the face of adverse circumstances; it is a peace that defies human understanding (Philippians 4:7).

  • Patience: The quality of forbearance under provocation. This grace entertains no thoughts of retaliation even when wrongfully treated (Colossians 1:11; 3:12).

  • Kindness: Benevolence in action. It is the same virtue God demonstrated toward us, and which Christians should display toward others (Romans 2:4; Colossians 3:12).

  • Goodness: The active reaching out to others to do good, even when it is not deserved or earned.

  • Faithfulness: The quality that renders a person trustworthy or reliable, much like the "faithful servant" who manages his master's house well (Luke 16:10-12).

  • Gentleness: Marks a person who is submissive to God’s Word (James 1:21) and who is considerate and humble when discipline or restoration is needed (Galatians 6:1).

  • Self-Control: The power to curb fleshly desires and impulses; it is the Spirit-given mastery over the passions of the old nature.

2. Crucifying the Flesh and Abiding in the Vine
To bear fruit, we must deal with the old nature and maintain a connection to the Source of life. Those who belong to Christ have "crucified" the flesh, making a decisive break with sinful passions. We cannot produce fruit by ourselves; just as a branch must stay attached to the vine to grow grapes, we must stay attached to Christ to grow His character.

  • Galatians 5:24: “And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.”

  • John 15:4-5: “Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself... I am the vine; you are the branches... apart from me you can do nothing.”

  • Romans 6:6: “We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing...”

3. Keeping in Step: The Choice of the Spirit
Since we have been given new life by the Spirit, we must now "keep in step" with Him. This is the daily choice between yielding to the pride of the flesh or the humility of the Spirit. Keeping in step means following the Spirit’s pace, direction, and convictions, which naturally leads away from conceit, provocation, and envy.

  • Galatians 5:25-26: “If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.”

  • Romans 8:14: “For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.”

  • Ezekiel 36:27: “And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules.”

Key Aspects

  • Mirroring Christ’s Character: View the fruit as His life, not your effort.
The Fruit of the Spirit is the actual character of Jesus being lived out through you, rather than a list of personality traits to develop. Practically, instead of trying to "be more patient" through sheer grit, shift your focus to Jesus’ patience. When your fuse is short, pray: "Jesus, I don't have the patience for this person right now, but You do. Please live Your life through me in this moment" (Galatians 5:22-23, Philippians 1:11).

  • Establishing a Foundation of Love: Filter every action through God’s affection.
Love is the root from which all other spiritual graces grow; without it, our actions are merely religious performance. Implement a "Love Filter" in your interactions today: before responding to a difficult email or a family member’s criticism, pause and ask, "How can I respond in a way that reflects the unmerited love God showed me?" This ensures your fruit is grounded in His grace rather than your ego (Galatians 5:22, John 3:16).

  • Abiding in the Vine: Prioritize your connection over your production.
Spiritual fruitfulness is the natural byproduct of staying connected to Christ, not the result of frantic human striving. Practically, if you feel "spiritually dry" or unproductive, stop focusing on the "fruit" and start focusing on the "Vine." Dedicate five minutes of your morning to sit in silence, acknowledging your total dependence on Him, saying: "Lord, I am the branch; I can do nothing apart from You today" (John 15:4-5, Romans 6:6).

  • Keeping in Step: Cultivate sensitivity to the Spirit’s promptings.
Walking by the Spirit is an active, moment-by-moment submission that requires rejecting pride and self-importance. Throughout the day, practice "Prompting Awareness": when you feel a sudden nudge to encourage someone, apologize for a mistake, or remain silent during a dispute, act on it immediately. This trains yor spiritual ears to hear and obey the Spirit's "cadence" rather than your own impulsive desires (Galatians 5:25-26, Romans 8:14).

Section Summary Statement

The Fruit of the Spirit is the supernatural evidence of a believer’s union with Jesus Christ, manifesting as a unified set of nine Christ-like graces that no human law or effort can replicate. By decisively crucifying the selfish passions of the flesh and maintaining a rhythmic, submissive walk with the Holy Spirit, the disciple transitions from dead religious works to a vibrant, abiding life that naturally displays God’s goodness, reliability, and self-control to a watching world.

Section Questions

  1. Abiding for Fruitfulness: Jesus said that apart from Him we can do "nothing" (John 15:5). What does your daily "abiding" time look like right now? How can you practically shift from "trying to be good" to "staying connected to the Vine" this week?

  2. Cultivating Specific Graces: Look at the list of the nine graces in Galatians 5:22-23. Which one do you feel is currently the most "underdeveloped" in your life (e.g., patience with a difficult coworker, or self-control with a specific habit)? Ask the Spirit to specifically grow that grace in you today.

  3. Crucifying Desires: Paul speaks of "crucifying the flesh" (Galatians 5:24). This often means saying "no" to a desire that feels natural but is not spiritual. What is one specific desire or impulse you need to "put to death" this week to make more room for the Spirit's fruit?

  4. Keeping in Step: To "keep in step" with the Spirit (Galatians 5:25) means following His pace. Are there areas where you are running ahead of God (impatience) or lagging behind (disobedience)? How can you realign your "pace" with His Word this week?

  5. The Evidence of Gentleness: Gentleness includes being submissive to God's Word and considerate when others need discipline (James 1:21; Galatians 6:1). Can you share a time when you chose a "gentle" response instead of a "harsh" one? How did that choice change the outcome of the situation?

  6. Assessing Inward Joy and Peace: Unlike happiness, the fruit of Joy and Peace rests in God's sovereign control (John 15:11; Philippians 4:7). In the midst of your current stressors or adverse circumstances, what specific promise from Scripture can you lean on to maintain an "inner quietness" this week?
